Why put a ruby in your watch?
Important components of mechanical watches are mainly sports machines, such as gear train chains, balance wheels and escapement structures. In the early days, these well-structured pivots drilled directly into the holes and turned into two pieces of brass that were separated by the struts. In order to make the assembly and repair process easier, the upper brass piece is replaced by another component called "rod" (also called "bridge" or "stick" depending on the number of brackets).
At the point of rotation at the other end of the pivot, the lower brass piece (called the "backsheet") is drilled with small holes. These holes have small oil grooves from which oil flows into the holes to lubricate the pivots. However, as time passes, dust in the air collects in the oil sump. As a result, this mixture of oil and dust forms an abrasive substance that acts like a sandpaper. Slowly, it will frustrate the softer brass on the sheet and, to some extent, even frustrate the harder steel pivot. Along with the use of the watch, the "ensemble" of the friction of the putty mixture with the rotation of the pivot causes the holes to become elliptical. After that, the watch will not work properly until it stops.
Through these observations, the watchmakers realized that it was necessary to find a material that was harder than brass and that could withstand the wear of the pivot. This material is ruby, a material that is second only to diamonds in hardness.
